The high season of tourism in Vietnam is approximately from December to April, specifically January and February. This is the best time of the year to travel in Vietnam. There is very little rain, long sunny days, and many festivals happening near and during Tet (the Lunar New Year).
Some of the younger generation in Vietnam might speak English in the city centers, such as in Hanoi, Da Nang, and Saigon, where English is commonly used to communicate with tourists. Outside of the city center, English is much less commonly used.
Visa and Mastercard are both commonly accepted at the airport, larger coffee shops, restaurants and souvenir shops. However, some local businesses prefer cash. We recommend bringing some common medicine like paracetamol (or Advil or Tylenol depending on where you are traveling from), or Imodium. Depending on the time you travel, for example if you travel to Vietnam during the high season (December to April), we highly recommend booking your international flights around 6-8 months before your trip. For hotel and domestic flights, we recommend booking around 4 months ahead.
It’s important to check the weather conditions of the location in Vietnam you will be traveling to. You should prepare suitable clothing accordingly. For example, it’s a good idea to prepare rain jackets or ponchos if you plan to travel to Saigon during the rainy season. There might be rain anytime of the day. A thicker jacket or coat is recommended if you are traveling to Hanoi during the winter time. And of course, your passport and E-visa are the most important things on your checklist before departure day. You will not be able to enter Vietnam without them.
Domestic flights in Vietnam (from south to north or central) are around $100-150/person. Hotels (4-5 stars) are commonly around $150-200USD, depending on the location and time of year. Much cheaper accommodations can be found depending on your personal preferences. Food and beverages are a very small expense in Vietnam. It is common for one person to eat all of their meals at local stores for less than $10 a day.
